BLIGHT Coral   NEW

Compiled by Gordon Freegard based on research by Merilyn Stewart

Named Alma Coral nee Grave but always known locally as Coral.
Coral was a bubbly personality, and had the distinction of having her name on the front page of the Gnowangerup Star for many years.

One of Coral’s community activities was distributing the ‘Meals on Wheels.

George had worked on family farms at Muckinbudin and Corrigin; and Coral met him in late 1949. They were married at St Matthew’s Church in Guildford in 1951.

They had three children ; Sandi, Wendy and Ken.
George had a sports store and a hairdressers shop in Waroona, where George had completed his mature age hairdressers apprenticeship.

They sold their business and moved to Gnowangerup in 1957.

Their daughter Sandi remembers she was about 5 and they lived at first in a house near the Main Street. They later moved a little further from the Main Street, living close to the Sadler’s family. Sandi recalls it as a lovely period in her life.
George and Sandi operated a local hairdressers salon and cafe. George was also a bus driver for the local school. Coral was a great support for George who was an active sportsman. Coral joined the committee of the Women’s Basketball Club. George also coached the local women’s hockey team and drove them in the bus to their away games.I
n the 19 50/60’s Coral owned a Burger Business, setting up shop on the corner of Yougenup and Allardyce Street which at one time was the premises for Dudley Thornton, the Boomerang Cafe and more recently Sumich’s grocery store.

In the 1970’s Coral worked at W.E. & M. Parnell’s.
When George passed away in 1993 Coral kept up her community work.
